The Black Lotus is a Swedish-based demo group, formed in 1989 when Atari coder Dickhead and his companion Rubberduck decided to build their own group on the Amiga. Originally an Amiga demo group, they have since branched out to most popular platforms. They were the first group to win The Gathering demo competition two years in a row.
The april 1995 demo Cybernetic reached 3rd position in The Gathering demo competition, and was the group's biggest success thus far. In june, the intro Mind The Carrot was the group's sole release at Icing 1995, reaching 9th in the competition. At Assembly 1995 in august came Misery - finishing 12th in the demo competition. The steady flow of releases would continue out the year, with the demos Que? (2nd at Remedy 1995) in october and Mindprobe (15th at The Party 1995) in december.
1996 started gently with the release of the demo Spectral at the small Swedish party Creutz in february. It was at The Gathering 1996 in april they broke through for real - through the release of the two 4k intros Gizmo and EQ-4k - 1st and 2nd in the competition - and the demo Tint - winner of the demo competition. They did not rest however, and already in may they released the intro Mind The Carrot 2 (1st) and the demo Glow (2nd) at the Icing 1996 party in Sweden. June brought the Remedy party, and once again TBL were triumphant in both intro and demo categories, with Tractorbeam and Darkside respectively. Their final release of the year was the demo Goa in august at Assembly, which finished 3rd in the competition. Apart from the jokey The Monkey Tribe in september, it would be until late march next year that they released anything.
The demo Captured Dreams made TBL the first ever group to win the demo competition twice at The Gathering. It would be their only demo on the Amiga this year.
Voted #5 most popular group in Fleur 3 (may 1999).
