The Ash Ock Underground (inspired by Empedocales, a fellow BBSer, who ran The Ash Ock Empire) started life in 1992 as a single line BBS in Toronto, Ontario. In 1993, I moved home to Grand Valley, Ontario and ran AOU as a multi node BBS until 1997. We were the second from last BBS in the area to close down.
In that time, we served hundreds of regular users, started several Ontario wide message nets, distributed thousands of files (we were the only BBS in the area that carried demoscene related files and chats) and had regular BBS get together with other boards in the area, including paintball days, baseball tournaments, BBQs and LAN parties.
In 1996, AOU and another board in the area, Quantum Flux, started VAM Computers in Orangeville Ontario which ran until 2024. 28 years!
The BBS era was one hell of a time to be alive and into computers and technology. I'm sad those days are gone, and I'm glad I was there to experience them. So many good times and good friends.
