The area code and number is unknown, but the original Sherwood Forest operated out of New Jersey or New York in 1979-1981. It operated as a digital bulletin board for message exchange and was a hangout for early phreakers and computer phreakers of greater New York region and was one of the first Scene boards.

The board's name became the inspiration for many unaffiliated sequels.
