So when will the "Random Girls With Hardware" thread open here?
So when will the "Random Girls With Hardware" thread open here?
I like demozoo better because it's quieter without some persons. One downside is that some of the links are to individual demos that will disappear over time.
Yeah, makes sense for me the way things were going over there. Very sad to see it reduced to such a state but now what can you do..? :/
It will probably go on I guess....maybe they'll just lock the forum and the oneliners.
Either way its good to know DEMOZOO is there to take over the demoscene-torch
The torch with all the drama and fights?
Restructuring on pouet admin/mod team should have happened over a decade ago... There should have been 2 active admins on the site taking care of the codebase, server updates, scene.org, etc. 3 - 4 moderators taking care of the bbs and prod comments, etc. and a couple of gloperators taking care of prod fixes, edits, etc. Right now almost everything was done mostly by Gargaj (admin) and some prod fixes were done by one or two moderators and that was it. This of course lead to a burnout + hating everyone in the community resulting to severe mental and physical health problems. It simply isn't worth it. Demozoo solved all these problems a decade ago by letting users edit stuff with a simple overlook from the admin/mod team. Guess which site has problems and which not. Also having clear (not strict) rules about what kind of behaviour is acceptable and what not + applying these rules to everyone in the community and not some people would also help a lot.
we saw how one glooper get a banhammer and how many complaints arose
Demozoo's (relative) lack of moderation problems is nothing to do with the administrative structure, and entirely down to the fact that its community hasn't grown large enough to attract the attention whores yet.
Awesome shaders. Seriously i like both, i hope both will continue.
@gasman If this thread is any indicator, that's about to change very quickly
No, please go away.
Let me express that I would really appreciate if Demozoo can stay a clean and rather neutral place with manners and rather polite language instead of becoming a cheap replacement for a potentially closed Pouet BBS.
Not everyone in the scene is into obscene language, memes and pseudo-elite demoscene humor known from Pouet and oneliners. The demoscene is far more than that and with Demozoo is such a great place to experience and explore it without all that crap. I am a big fan and really enjoy digging deep in the site.
If something is to learn from Pouet, it's not to repeat the disfunctional pattern at another place.
Looking at literally 50% of the ten most recently active threads, I don't think the Demozoo forum was all that great even before that announcement on Pouet. However, as far as I can tell, it's still not as big of a problem as the Pouet BBS. As Gasman points out, there are less users on this site. Also, in my understanding, most of those users come here for the more comprehensive and feature rich demoscene production database. The forum isn't quite as prominent a part of Demozoo, yet.
I don't know what's going to happen with Pouet and the demoscene's collective online spaces over the next couple of months, and neither does anyone else. However, whatever will happen will be significant. The absolute worst case scenario is that Pouet shuts down, the demoscene's online culture will not bother with introspection at all, and all Pouet's problems are now the problems of the next biggest site.
I don't think I have any unique insight here. I think we all know this. It's just that we don't like talking about it. I started a thread titled "Demoscene social issues" on Pouet once. To this day I'm not sure if that did more good or harm.
BBS is not needed. It is better to leave the topic of demoparty announcements, technical questions and programming that can help beginners. You can talk about life in chats, Telegram and Discord
Imho the main problem did not lie with the BBS itself but rather with the pouet admin/mod team. They ended up so burnt out that started to see everyone and everything as a troll, shitpost, potential danger, etc. I have been studying the pouet source code for a very long time to know that there are other penalties before getting banned, for instance, a user can simply be prevented from posting to the BBS while can still post on prods and so on. The admin/mod team ignores all these light penalties and goes straight for a ban. Apart from that, they often can be seen many times to be part of the problem by enacting the same kind of behaviour they are trying to discourage on other users. This definitely isn't a sign of a healthy moderation. For me, the users of a community are the last to be blamed when coming to the admin policy of a site. All these beg the question: Why should someone be afraid to post their view on a site like pouet? What is the point of having a BBS or a prod section, if the only thing allowed to be said there is only what the admin/mod team approves?
@Defiance: You had plenty of warnings before you were banned, but you chose to interpret them as "Gargaj just has a personal grudge against me".
gasman: I had 0 warnings with a valid reason. Gargaj has openly admitted (finally) that had a burnout and hates everyone (not just me) in the community for it. Having cooperated with the pouet admin/mod team for more than 15 years, fixing stuff on pouet, allow me to know their intentions better. I don't have anything against them, never did, but I see their narrative being spread around as the defacto one even though most of the community has finally seen what has been going on pouet for the last couple of years. :/
Is Pouët dead? 😢
No, just a little old and rusty! :)
If we assume that Demozoo will replace pouet as a primary source for hosting and discussing demoscene (as well as thumbs up and rating stuff like that), It would only make sense if you took away from the editing/creating freedom from users for security reasons, which leads me to believe that Demozoo could become the 2nd "pouet" in a sense, where the beforementioned toxicity would reside here too
Gasman has summarized my thoughts better earlier. I just didn't read the convo thorought yet. Great thinking
