Demozoo Standards and Practices

Since we do things a little different than some of the other demoscene databases you may have experience with in the past, we feel that it's useful to keep our policies in a central place for easy reference to answer any questions, and explain the reasoning behind each.

Privacy

We feel the right to online privacy is a fundamental one, and one the demoscene has traditionally been uneven at exercising. Therefore, even if there is a field for real names on all scener profiles (which only admins can edit), we try and be smart about whether to populate it or not. As a rule of thumb, if the scener in question clearly promotes being a demoscener in their online presence (Twitter/Facebook/Soundcloud/etc), and/or has revealed their real name on other demoscene sites in which the user edits these things themselves (Pouët profile), and/or has not objected to it on sites which are very on-the-ball about respecting users' wishes with regards to such matters (Nectarine), then they are probably okay with it being presented on our profile pages as well. In cases of doubt, we try and reach out to the person in question to check how they feel about it. Admins have access to a field where relevant information towards this is present - i.e. if someone has asked their name not be included, those with rights to edit such things know not to include it in the future.

In other words, we try and keep it opt-in - either directly where possible or indirectly.

Versions of Tools

We find it beneficial to keep a separate record of different versions of the demoscene-specific tools, since there are sometimes differences that make the version significant in some way - particularly in older tools like trackers and crunchers. This is in line with how CSDB does it, but the opposite of how Pouët does it - in the latter case, they tend to have one production id for the tool, and then that gets updated with new versions.

Ports

In cases where a production is ported to a different platform, we prefer a link to the port, and the new supported platform be added to the existing production, rather than a new production being made. This is the general policy, unless there is significant difference between the port and the original. If so, please make this difference obvious either in the title or at the very least in the comments for that production.

Cracktros

We feel very strongly that cracktros are important historical artifacts, and we feel that every unique cracktro has a place in Demozoo. Not only does it inform us of the period in which it was used, but they also often feature pertinent infomation about member changes and other goings-on in the groups in question. Our history would not be complete without all of them. Here, our philosophy differs from other sites. Pouët allows only one variation of each cracktro - so, just one classic Fairlight Wizardry intro - while CSDB catalogs the Cracks, not the Cracktros as such - so they include Cracks with no cracktros.
