Equal char packers (often also referred to as densers) were very popular on the C64 platform, where you would first compress with an equal char packer, and then with a sequence packer for maximum compression. This type of compression would be called RLE today.
A packer or cruncher is a tool for compressing files so that they take up less diskspace. Such tools were extremely popular on the c64, Amiga and MS-DOS platforms, but exist on all popular demoscene platforms.
