Black Scorpion Software

- BSS

UK based group that was active from 1993 to 1997 on the Atari Falcon.

DML left ICE Software to develop Atari products, forming a company named Black Scorpion Software (BSS). Two other members of TPT (Highlander, PCM) were involved. The company was co-formed with another developer with a scene background (Neilly) but who had worked mostly alone coding for fun. (Neilly had seen Benny's texture mapped cube screen - an ST first - and was impressed. He had coded his own attempt by the second day).

BSS released several products for Atari Falcon: Apex Media (pixel painter, animation), BSSDebug (a Videl-friendly Falcon debugger), Videlity (Falcon screen booster). Other products (Desktop/windowing replacement) were in the pipeline but were sidelined to focus on the Jaguar console.

Apex was aimed at game artists who wanted to paint sprites, and demo makers who wanted to manipulate and export graphics data in a simple way. It may never have been used for games (?) but it did find a place with some demo crews on the Falcon.

The Videlity author (Dave Murphy) also produced 'Pebbles', a boulderdash game for the Atari Falcon with level editor. It's not clear whether this was ever released (DML: if not it certainly should have been, it played great!). The level editor was reworked & rebuilt for a Jaguar game later on.

Several small Falcon 'demo screens' had been coded by DML shortly after obtaining a Falcon, but hadn't been finished or used in any releases. These were given to Atari UK to help secure Jaguar developer status and equipment. These demos were later distributed by Atari as Falcon promotional material ('Atari UK Demos').

A demo was produced of one Jaguar game (Livewire) but BSS could not convince Atari to carry publishing costs for this or any other projects. BSS was too small to carry the cost on their own and the project was abandoned. BSS closed its doors soon afterwards, having invested all time and resources on the Jaguar.

DML, Neilly, PCM later worked together several times in subsequent years, mainly in the games industry but also in other fields.
