A packer or cruncher is a tool for compressing files so that they take up less diskspace. Such tools were extremely popular on the c64, Amiga and MS-DOS platforms, but exist on all popular demoscene platforms.
Sequence packers were very popular on the C64 platform, where you would first compress with an equal char packer, and then with a sequence packer for maximum compression.
