BBS

Metal Impact

Location: Mechelen, Provincie Antwerpen, Flanders, Belgium

+32-152129XX

It ran for Fusion in april 1992, for Quartex in 1996, For Bad Karma between april (3 nodes) and july 1996 (5 nodes), and for Arcadia in july of 1996.

Came back online via telnet in 2020.

History of the BBS, written by TCB in January 2022: "Maddy, formerly known as Mad Shitbrain, opened the BBS in late 1991. Initially started as an experiment and running at night only, Maddy really got into being a full-time sysop after a few months. He was one of the few sysops to actually buy an official copy of AmiExpress and became the Belgian Distribution Point for AmiExpress. He went 24/7 on a dedicated phone line soon followed by a second node. Maddy was also one of early adopters of ASCII/ANSI art and Metal Impact featured numerous cycling login screens by all the early ascii artists as well as many ANSI animations. His previous group (Pussy) had disbanded, some members (mostly Dutch) went on to form Jetset whereas others (Germany) created Awesome, which was immediately the first group to have the BBS as Belgian HQ. When the co-sysop, -TCB!-, joined Energy, the board also became HQ for them. Meanwhile, the board's activity and popularity were on the rise. In late 1992, the bbs became BHQ for the first 'major' group: Fusion. In 1993, Maddy had enough of running the board and wanted to shut it down but offered it to the co-sysop, -TCB!- to take over. Reluctant at first, -TCB!- accepted and the BBS moved area code and started running on S-Express. For a short while, the BBS was in Global Overdose but when that group disbanded, the BBS followed -TCB!- to join Hoodlum, later adding Royal and Kingdom to the roster of groups. The board first ran on a single node again, but node 2 & 3 were added in 1994 and 2 more telnet-nodes in 1995. When Hoodlum abandoned the Amiga platform in early 1996, the BBS became BHQ for Quartex who were in co-op with Classic for a short while in 1996. By then, Telnet had become mainstream and overnight, the BBS scene changed. US boards were no longer the fastest and European boards really peaked both in terms of speed and activity, Metal Impact being one of the beneficiaries. The board was now actively competing with some of the fastest boards and actually came out on top once in the then-popular Dream Charts for which it was also BHQ. Meanwhile, -TCB!- had founded Bad Karma, which later went into a coop with Crux and together they formed one of the last active groups on Amiga until all releases inevitably dried up. Unfortunately, the BBS would not get to make it to the 'very end' as it got raided in 1997 by the police - mainly for the H/P/A conference where 'cards of different nature' were exchanged as well as other information to call out for free."
